Value !! More important than colour
Ask most artists what they think is the most important aspect to painting and most of them will probably say colour. You may be very surprised to know that it isn't even number 2 !!! If you do not get the values right, colour will not work as it should.
What then is value ? Value refers to the whole range of tones between black and white. When you get the values right, even the most bazarre colous can work. This is VERY important. A painting must have a dominant value, whether the dominant colour is light, medium or dark. Pet Portraits,Portraits of Dogs,Portraits of Horses |

Pastels, a lovely medium
Pastels do not seem to be a very popular medium in the U.K., even though pastels do have the purest colours of any of the other mediums, are very versatile and once behind glass, will last for many life times. The secret is to use them along with a fixative so as to to work in layers. Are there any pastel artists out there who can verify this ?
